The Big Five Emergency Response Plan- How we plan and prepare for emergencies

At Highlands we take the safety of our students and staff very seriously. Our staff is well-trained in emergency preparedness, so we are prepared in the event of an emergency.  We follow the San Mateo County Office of Education’s Big Five common emergency plan, which has been adopted by all San Mateo County school districts and law enforcement agencies. This emergency plan was created by San Mateo County's Coalition for Safe Schools and Communities and provides five immediate action responses in any given emergency:

  • Shelter in Place

  • Drop, Cover, and Hold On

  • Secure Campus

  • Lockdown/Barricade

  • Evacuation
