Dear Highlands Community,

Principal Carrie

When we are in school we teach our students about the three B’s: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.  Starting in September each month we will begin a school wide Life Skill Themes to focus on building school wide character traits and social skills.  The purpose of this school wide work is to help build our school culture and expectations for healthy social emotional development to compliment our social emotional curriculum called Second Step. The language we learn together in school will help our staff and community communicate our values and expectations for who we are and how we want to be in the world. Please partner with us as we begin our Social Emotional Learning here at Highlands. As lifelong learners we can apply learning in all aspects of our life, at home, in school, and in our community. Together we can create an inclusive environment that is welcoming and supportive to all.

Thank you for helping ensure our students are safe by limiting gatherings in the mornings at drop off. It’s great to see our students confidently finding their place in line independently. Students are doing well with masking at school, and I also want to thank our parents following the mask mandate. Please note that there are some medical exceptions to the mask mandate. For example, we have some Highlands parents with hearing loss who can't understand people with masks on and there is a state law that allows an exemption for the mask mandate for those with hearing loss who rely on face-to-face communication.  For this purpose, it is okay for people to remove their masks outdoors to communicate with a person with hearing loss while socially distanced and away from students. The state law allows this. I wanted to share this law to avoid confusion and misunderstandings on our campus.
